Demonstration: Laura Grant

Before the meeting, at 1 pm, Laura Grant will give a demonstration of an easy method of rooting fig cuttings. Laura would like to encourage more people to grow this wonderful fruit. Laura will also demonstrate grafting tree peonies.

During the demo, Laura will have seeds of the following plants available on first come-first served basis:
Poncirus trifoliata (hardy citrus)
Paw paw (fruit tree)
Halesia Arnold's pink (very showy silverbell tree) and
Amaryllis belladonna (hardy South African bulb)

November Members Showcase

Virginia Hildebrandt: Seeds expected at the Seedex

Virginia will present photos of the seeds expected at the Seedex this year. You will have the opportunity to see the plants the seeds came from, and what the seeds will eventually grow into. The photos are so valuable every year, and give an impression no internet search can compete with.

Auction of Encyclopedia of Alpines

Anna Leggatt has generously donated this encyclopedia, published by the Alpine Garden Society in 2 volumes in 1993.  On-line used book dealers are currently asking at least $200 (Canadian) for the set. Despite the fact that this reference is now free on-line, we know that many of our members are book lovers or collectors who will be anxious to acquire their own copy.  It is Anna's hope that by holding monthly draws or auctions of highly desirable items, more of our members will opt to attend meetings in person rather than over Zoom. For this reason, we have established a few rules.

  • Anna's donations will be available exclusively to members who attend meetings in-person.
  • Bidding will start at $25.
  • Payment by cash or cheque. E-transfer will be accepted only if you immediately show us the receipt on your phone.

Draw for Colocasia Bulbs

There will be a free draw for 3 bulbs of Elephant Ears. Retail value is about $20 per plant! They should be stored cool, but frost-free, over the winter and planted in a very moist, partially shaded location once the warm weather returns.
