Bio:  John Lonsdale was born in in Sheffield, England, and has grown a wide variety of alpine and woodland plants
and bulbs for more than 30 years.  Prior to moving to the USA in 1995, John was a very active member of the Alpine Garden Society, specializing in the growing members of the Primulaceae, particularly Dionysia, Primula and Androsace, and Saxifraga.  He also grew many smaller hardy bulbs, including a representative collection of Cyclamen.  John was awarded the Alpine Garden Society Gold Merit Medal in 1995.
John and his family live and garden in Exton, SE Pennsylvania in a climate which has proved to be wonderful for growing in-character hardy plants and bulbs.  Extensive plantings of woodlanders include Trillium, Helleborus, Cypripedium, Hepatica and Epimedium.  Representative collections of Cyclamen, Crocus, Iris, Corydalis, Narcissus, Fritillaria and Erythronium species are also featured.  John is particularly interested in pushing the limits of cultivation of many of these plants, and has extensive experience propagating them from seed, cuttings, and by division.
John has been an active member of a number of horticultural groups, including the Daphne Society, Alpine Garden Society, Cyclamen Society, North American Rock Garden Society, Scottish Rock Garden Club, AGS Fritillaria Group, The Crocus Group, Aril Society International and the Species Iris Group of North America.  John contributed a chapter discussing Cyclamen in North America to the book, “Genus Cyclamen in Science, Cultivation, Art and Culture”, recently published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  He regularly contributes articles to the publications of a number of societies, lectures widely and maintains a website (www.edgewoodgardens.net) featuring over 10,000 images of the garden and plants he grows, as well as pages devoted to cultivation and propagation, and a listing of surplus plants and seeds for sale or exchange.
